My 24 Hour Media Diary

By: Leslie Burton, MCO 425

6:00 AM – My alarm on my iPhone went off. I turned off the alarm and got out of bed. I normally do not look at anything on my iPhone.

6:05 AM – I turned on my podcast on Spotify using my iPhone. I listen to a podcast each morning while I get ready for the day. Today, I listened to Leo Skepi, host of Aware and Aggravated. The episode was about “Releasing Your Fear of Judgment.” While the podcast is one hour long, I listened to 25 minutes. I learned that while you may think that someone is saying something or thinking negative about you, the person may actually be admiring you. An example that was used was a person sitting and eating by himself in a restaurant. When you look at the person, you think that he is confident and wish you have confidence to sit and eat alone. In reality, no one is looking at the person.

6:35 AM – I set the timer on my iPhone for 6 minutes while I made hard boiled eggs.

6:41 AM – I turned the timer on my iPhone off when my alarm rang.

6:45 AM – I set up Netflix on my phone and watched “Thirteen Reasons Why”. The show was about a teenage girl that was bullied to death. Her case is currently going to trial. I watched two episodes while I ate my eggs.

7:00 AM – I checked my ASU email on my iPhone to see if I had any new messages.

7:01 AM – I checked SnapChat on my iPhone to see if I had a message from my boyfriend. My boyfriend sent a “Good Morning” message. I responded with my “Good Morning” message.

7:03 AM – I checked my Instagram feed. I saw a lot of posts about people having babies. Did you know that Justin Bieber had a baby? He had a baby boy that he named Jack Blues Bieber.

7:15 AM – I used the GPS on my iPhone to get directions to drive to work at Starbucks.

7:30 AM – I used the Starbuck’s iPad to clock in for my shift.

9:30 AM – My break – I used my iPhone to google how to make a Strawberry Acai Lemonade with Vanilla after one of my Starbuck’s customer recommended the drink.

12:45 PM – I used the Starbuck’s iPad to clock out after completing my shift.

1:00 PM– I used the GPS on my iPhone to get directions to drive home after working my shift at Starbucks.

2:00 PM – I googled on my iPhone to learn how to set up my new starlight projector that I purchased at Home Depot on my way home from Starbucks.

3:00 PM – I logged on to my new Lenovo Yoga laptop to ASU Online to access my class material for MCO 425 – Digital Media Literacy 1.

I followed the link for Module 2 and I watched the various videos including Media History, Ownership, and Regulation by Professor Qian Li, Media 3.0 – A Brief History of Media by Dan Gillmor, Media Ownership: Crash Course Media Literacy #8 by Jay Smooth, and Net Neutrality by PBS News Hour on You Tube.

I also read the notes and followed the links to read.

5:45 PM – I took a break, put my FitBit on my wrist for an exercise class that I am taking for a Physical Education requirement, and went for a walk.

While I was walking, I listened to another podcast episode on Spotify, Resetting How Social Media Makes You Feel by Leo Skepi, from Aware and Aggravated on my iPhone.

6:20 PM – I reviewed my notes from MCO 425 – Digital Media Literacy 1 online on my computer and then I completed Module 2: Quiz on my computer

7:00 PM – I decided to make pasta. I used my iPhone to set the timer for 10 minutes after the water started boiling.

7:02 PM – While I was making dinner, I watched Netflix on my iPhone and continued to watch “Thirteen Reasons Why” which I started watching during my breakfast. I watched two more episodes while I cooked and then ate my pasta salad.

7:45 PM – While I took a shower, I listened to my playlist on Spotify on my iPhone.

8:10 PM – I searched NetFlix for a movie to watch on my TV.

10:30 PM – I set my alarm for 6 AM on my iPhone.

10:31 PM – I sent a good night message to my boyfriend on SnapChat on my iPhone.

I enjoy engaging with various forms of media. Media brings happiness into my daily life. Upon reflecting on my media usage, I access a wide range of platforms, including Snapchat, Netflix, Spotify, Instagram, and Google, among others. These platforms are integral to how I navigate my world, and I have realized just how dependent I am on them.

The media I engage with has a positive impact on my life, particularly in how it enhances my ability to communicate. Through texts, emails, and the sharing of photos, digital media allows me to stay connected with my friends. I feel that it is more than just a tool, media helps me maintain relationships and share important moments.

In addition to communication, I rely on digital media for both information and entertainment. Whether I am streaming a new series on Netflix, discovering new music on Spotify, or catching up on the latest trends and news via Instagram and Google, media plays a central role in keeping me informed and entertained. The variety and accessibility of these platforms make them an essential part of my everyday life, allowing me to explore different perspectives, stay updated, and unwind after a long day.

When it comes to credibility, I find certain sources more reliable than others. When I need to look up information, I use Google. Google is one of the largest search engines. I use sources that end in .edu or .org. These websites are more credible.

For entertainment I use Snapchat and Instagram. I realize that these sites are user-driven and may not be accurate, but I use these sites more for social contact rather than for information. I like how these platforms have real-time updates from my friends.

Overall, my use of digital media is a fundamental part of who I am. It not only keeps me connected and informed but also brings me joy, making it an important element of my daily life.
